If you are staying at home for the Holidays this year, you are certainly not alone. This year has truly thrown a spanner into the works, and thanks to COVID-19, many of us will be enjoying the Christmas and New Years at home. It is no secret that at Windows on Washington we love everything there is to do with homes… so spending the Holidays at home is certainly something we are looking forward to. And, because we know plenty of you will also be home for the Holidays, we thought we would put this article together to give you a few of our best home improvement tips and tricks to help you enjoy the Holidays at home this year.
When undertaking a home improvement project, it is common to dream big – and there is certainly nothing wrong with that! However, the Holiday season is a time for fun and relaxation, so you do not want to bite off more than you can chew. Christmas and New Year’s is just around the corner, so perhaps remodeling your entire bathroom might not be the right choice at this point in time. So, think small! Make a list of things you want to get done around the house (broken lights, power washing your outdoor deck, a fresh coat of paint, and so on).
Just like with a normal vacation, you would not jump in the car without knowing your route. A staycation at home also requires a route and some forward thinking. If you dedicate some time to figure out what home improvement projects you want to tackle, you will help yourself avoid any unwanted detours. Think about the projects you want to start, and then make a list of the tools and equipment you will need to get it all done. This will save you getting stuck halfway through a project when you realize you are missing a vital piece of the puzzle and have to make your 4th trip back to the hardware store!
If you are having family members over for the Holidays, the living room, bathroom and kitchen will most likely be the most commonly used areas. That is why it is a good idea to focus on improving these spaces first. For example, to make it look like you have had new kitchen cabinets installed, you can get a new backsplash, which can easily be replaced in a week. And, some bathroom cosmetic remodelling can make a huge difference, such as replacing old grout, adding a fresh coat of paint, or installing a dimmer switch to the light overhead.
There is nothing worse than needing to rug up with layers when you are inside, which is why insulation is a must this Holiday season. With guests popping in and out, you do not want to be cranking the heat non-stop – or you might get a big surprise when paying your next utility bill. One solution to keeping your home toasty but without over-using the HVAC unit is making sure your home is properly insulated and sealed. Installing insulation can be costly, so you can simply start with the rooms that get the most use. The good news is insulating your home will keep your house comfortable throughout all the seasons, not just during the cooler months.
If you are overwhelmed with all the things you have to do before the Holiday season really kicks into gear, fear not, help is available! Hiring a professional home improvement contractor will take the weight off your shoulders and ensure your home is in tip top condition before the Holiday season starts.
