Comparing Single and Double Hung Windows
While single and double hung windows may look similar, there are significant differences in functionality to consider.
Although the choice between single hung and double hung windows depends on your priorities, double hung windows are the standard choice for residential window replacement.

What is a Single Hung window?
Also known as a single sash window, is a window that has an operable lower sash and an upper sash that remains stationary.
-
Because only the lower sash is operational, a single hung window offers fewer ventilation options, even though generally both single and double hung windows offer the same total amount of ventilation.
-
The material used to manufacture the window has a greater effect on energy efficiency, than whether it’s a single or double hung configuration. Although, single hung windows may have the benefit of reduced air infiltration rates.
-
Single hung windows tend to be a cost saving solution, especially in a new construction project given that they are easily mass produced and tend to be of lower quality than their double hung counterparts. Single Hung windows should rarely be used in a residential remodel capacity.
-
Single hung windows are best suited for mass market, new construction projects at scale such as apartment buildings or townhome communities.
What is a Double Hung window?
Also known as a double sash window, is a window that has both an operable lower and upper sash to allow for greater ventilation.
-
Double hung windows offer the flexibility of ventilating from both the top and bottom sashes, allowing for better maximum air movement and circulation.
-
Both single and double hung windows are designed with energy efficiency in mind. The material used to manufacture the window (fiberglass, vinyl, composite, or wood), has a greater influence on energy efficiency than the double hung vs. single hung configuration.
-
The cost of a double hung window is typically higher than that of a single hung window. While slightly higher in cost, the benefits of a double hung window in a residential remodel project tend to far outweigh any cost saving benefit.
-
Double hung windows are a popular choice for their classic design and timeless appeal, making them suitable for various architectural styles. Double hung windows also offer easier cleaning, as both sashes can tilt inward to give access to both interior and exterior surfaces of glass.

For replacement windows, air infiltration (or, Air Leakage) refers to the amount of outside air that can sneak in through tiny gaps or openings in the newly installed windows. Minimizing Air Infiltration helps make your windows more energy efficient by keeping the air you pay to heat or cool… In. Plus, unlike solar coatings, tight windows improve your energy efficiency 24 hours a day! One of the main reasons we primarily recommend Okna windows is that they were specifically designed to be air tight. The Okna EnviroStar Double Hung has an Air Infiltration of .01! That's the best rating on the market!
-
Design pressure refers to the amount of external pressure that windows are designed to withstand without compromising their structural integrity. It is a measure of the window's ability to resist forces such as wind, water, and other environmental factors. Okna Windows have some of the highest DP ratings available for residential replacement windows.
