Want to learn more about your home improvement project? WoW is your exterior home improvement expert!
Despite all of our best laid plans for perfectly timing renovations and home improvement projects, they rarely follow the envisioned schedules. Many times, urgency of the repair or the financing of the project ultimately dictate the time line for installation. However, homeowners do have concerns about starting a window replacement, exterior doors, siding or roofing project outside of what they consider ideal weather conditions.
Poor weather conditions for any exterior home improvement project:
Certainly, the weather extremes in certain Northern regions of the country will dictate that projects with temperature minimums cannot be completed (at least not in a cost effective manner.) In addition, bulk moisture in the form of snow or rain can cause delays due to unsafe working conditions, possible water infiltration and proper curing of sealants or adhesives.
Proper weather conditions to replace asphalt roofing:
The installation of a new asphalt roof requires certain maintained minimum temperatures in order to effectively adhere and seal overlapping shingle courses. Asphalt shingles applied at or below those minimum temperatures will be more subject to blow-offs prior to sealing themselves to the course below. Before starting a winter roofing project, consult with your licensed contractor and manufacturer for the specific requirements of your chosen shingle, and confirm that the warranty will protect you against such blow-offs.
Proper weather conditions for window replacement, exterior doors, siding and metal roofing:
Most window replacement, exterior doors, siding and metal roofing projects are not subject to the same temperature restrictions. Although these projects require sealants and adhesives which are subject to curing, licensed professionals are sufficiently familiar with these materials to advise you on the required temperature for suitable use. For example, if sealant is applied during the warmer daytime temperature and given adequate time to cure, chilly overnight lows will not compromise their strength or durability. Consequently, homeowners do not need to postpone these projects until the warmer temperatures of spring.
Windows on Washington’s advice to project timing:
At the end of the day, scheduling your project for perfect weather is an utopian approach that isn’t required if best practice installation methods are used. With few exceptions, there is no better time than the present to start your home improvement project.
