With spring in the air, the WoW Team is getting ready for a jump in window replacement projects. Each year during the spring invariably means a rapid increase in the number of window replacement inquiries, which always makes it one of the most exciting and productive times of our working year.
As we meet with new and existing customers, one of the most common questions concerns window quality. ‘What are the best windows on the market?’, is something we hear almost every day.
The answer isn’t always straightforward. The best quality window really depends on the customer; their lifestyle, energy use, the location of their existing windows and their budget are all important factors.
In our opinion, ‘quality’ doesn’t always mean the most expensive product. But it does mean a product that achieves certain industry and consumer expectations and standards based on its overall cost.
Quality also means confidence that your purchase will be able to long withstand harsh summers, brutal winters and everything in between.
If you are thinking about tackling a window replacement project this season, here are some tips to help you choose the best quality windows for your home.
Materials
Operation
Don’t be afraid to test display windows. Do they look as though they will withstand heavy use? Does the window latch firmly without too much effort? Does the weatherstripping fit snugly? Are the screens solidly built and easy to remove?
Glass selection
Energy-efficient double-pane glass should be a standard option, but it may be worth paying a little extra for two additional features: a low-E coating and argon gas between the panes. Most manufacturers have two variations of this type of glass, one designed for cold climates and one designed to control sunlight in warmer climates. If you spend more for air conditioning than for heating, choose the warm-climate type, and if you spend more for heating, choose the cold-climate type.
Service
Ask your manufacturer or window company if replacement window parts are easily available should they break or wear out. Also consider the weatherstripping and if it is easily replaced when needed.
Warranties
Compare the warranties of different companies for parts and finishes. While most jobs are completed without problems, occasionally there can be unforeseen faults or glitches that compromise the quality of your window. In that situation, you don’t want to be left out in the cold. Look for a warranty that covers glass replacement as well as window mechanisms so they can be easily replaced in case of any problems. Note: Keep the receipt for your window purchase and the warranty in your records.
Cleaning
When purchasing a replacement window, don’t forget the basic maintenance that comes with them, namely cleaning. Think about where your window will be located on your house and how easily accessible the interior and exterior panels are for cleaning.
