At Windows on Washington, we love any excuse to carry out home improvements, especially those of the creative and spooky variety. You know what we are talking about – Halloween is coming! Every October we enjoy turning up the chills and thrills of our Halloween décor. After all, it only comes once a year.
And if we are being honest, there is nothing quite like giving your neighbors and trick or treaters a playful fright when they come knocking on your door this October 31st. This blog is a little twist on our usual home improvement articles where we are going to provide you with some creative and fun ideas you can use to spook up your house this Halloween.
There are many ways you can decorate your house, from elegant to playful, subtle or completely over the top – the choice is up to you! Halloween decorations range from the traditional harvest, to family-friendly or ultra-frightening with ghosts, ghouls, skeletons, scary pumpkins and more.
We think one of the most important things when creating a spooky scene, however, is to keep it consistent and unified. Your decorations will feel more authentic when all the lighting and props have a similar look.
If you are wanting a simple and subtle look for your home this Halloween, you might enjoy the traditional harvest theme. The best way to bring the traditional harvest theme to life is by laying a wreath on your front door. All you need is a dried grapevine wreath, add some moss and to make it a little creepy and a few black plastic bugs or snakes. You could also spray-paint the wreath black for an even more frightening look.
The seasonable harvest look is also easy to create with pumpkins. You can place traditional jack-o’-lanterns on your doorstep or just outside the front of your house. Make your pumpkins stand out by creating different shapes and colors. You can also carve different faces on each pumpkin, from friendly to down-right terrifying.
If you have kids or live in a neighborhood with lots of children, you might like to go for the family-friendly theme. All you need to do is make sure you add plenty of colors and smiling pumpkin faces. Think colors along the lines of purple, orange and black, or a mixture. Instead of blood and gore, you can have friendly witches, ghosts and scarecrows. Another option is to add garlands to your windows, or include a cute trick-or-treat sign in your garden.
If you want to go for something a little spookier and scarier this Halloween, there are so many decorations you can choose from, including skeletons, skulls, ghosts, and bats. Accessorizing with spider webbing is always a great crowd pleaser, especially when hung from your roof and trailing all the way down to the ground. You can also fill the webbing with little black spiders for an even spookier look. While you are at it, you can add to the scary scene by filling your front yard with fake tombstones. Go one step further by sticking bones into the dirt so it looks like zombies rising from the dead.
If you have trees in your yard, you can tie ghosts that blow in the breeze to frighten trick or treaters as they walk by. Or, you can put some skeletons in rocking chairs or have them seated on stools on your front porch. For something a little bit extra, decorate around them with bones, skulls and cauldrons. If you really want to go all out and create a really spooky feel, you could also hire a smoke machine for the occasion.
