If you are looking for a home improvement investment that will offer you the best ROI (Return on Investment), look no further than insulation. The truth is, many homeowners are hesitant about installing insulation in their home, mostly due to the hefty upfront price. However, it is important to remember insulation comes in a variety of materials and at multiple price points. And, even if you choose the most expensive insulation material, you are likely to recoup that investment over time with lower utility bills. In this article, we will be discussing all things insulation and answering the question every homeowner wants to know: is insulation for your home expensive?

The Different Types of Insulation

When it comes to insulating your home, there are four main types of insulation. The type of insulation your home requires will highly depend on the area you need to insulate, the location of your home and your budget.

Foam Insulation

There are many types of foam insulation, yet the most common type is polyurethane foam, which is sprayed into ceilings and walls. This type of insulation quickly expands and forms an air tight seal. Foam insulation is best used when dealing with small leaks and gaps. However, due to its energy efficiency and durability, foam insulation is one of the more expensive insulation materials.

Blanket Insulation

Fiberglass insulation is the best insulation when it comes to new home constructions and spaces that are easy to access, like your attic. Blanket insulation comes in rolls or batts, which makes it easy to cut and fit in any space, including around electrical boxes and pipes. In terms of cost, blanket insulation is cheaper than foam insulation.

Loose Fill Insulation

Loose fill insulation, which is also commonly known as blown-in insulation, is one of the most commonly used insulation types. It can be compromised of a variety of materials, such as: cellulose, fiberglass, polystyrene beads, perlite or vermiculite. And, loose fill insulation is one of the most affordable insulation types.

Rigid Insulation

Rigid insulation is another popular choice when it comes to insulating residential homes.
The most common materials used in rigid insulation are: polyisocyanurate, expanded polystyrene, bead board, EPS, XPS, rigid fiberglass and phenolic foam boards. However, this type of insulation can be one of the most expensive types thanks to its thermal comfort and durability.

Home Insulation Costs – What You Need to Remember

The cost of insulating your home is dependent on a variety of factors. When researching estimated costs for insulating your home, it is important you take into account the specific costs associated with insulating different parts of your home. This is because insulation costs will greatly vary based on where and what you are insulating. How much it will cost to insulate your attic will be significantly different to how much it will cost to insulate your roof or garage. This is not only due to the size of the space that needs insulating, but also based on the type of insulation that is needed for different areas in your home.

How Much Should You Pay for Quality Insulation in Maryland and Virginia?

For Maryland and Virginia homeowners, the question of whether you need insulation in your home is common. This is because both regions experience a mild climate year round. However, insulation is vital for any energy-efficient home. Not only will it help lower your utility bills throughout the year, insulation also comes with these additional benefits:

  •  It helps keep moisture and condensation at bay
  •  Reduces emissions of pollutants of your home
  •  Reduces noise levels in your home
  •  Increases fire protection

When it comes to determining how much you should pay for insulation in Maryland and Virginia, you need to consider the following:

  • The type of insulation
  • The R-value of the insulation
  • Other work that is required to complete the project
  • How the insulation is installed

As you can see, when it comes to insulating your home, there are a variety of factors that will influence how much it will cost. The bottom line is that even if you choose the most expensive insulation to install in your home, you will recoup the costs and more when your utility bills begin to decrease.

If you are looking to insulate your home, we advise you speak to a professional home improvement contractor who will be able to evaluate the specific needs of your home, so you can get the most accurate estimate.
