Replacing the windows in your home is a big decision. Not only do you have to weigh up the cost of purchase and installation; energy efficiency, lighting, impact on comfort levels and aesthetics are all things you need to consider. Complicating the process is the amount of information available about different types of windows. While intended to be helpful, the endless stream of brochures and webpages can prove to be overwhelming for customers who are left to decipher the science-based fact from sales-based fiction.
Often at Windows on Washington we are asked about the differences between double pane and triple pane windows. In this post we will break down the five most common selection criteria people use when selecting a replacement window so you can make an informed decision about what is best for your home.
Some companies may tout triple pane windows as reducing noise pollution, but in reality the difference is negligible. The biggest impact on sound transmission is through the type of glass you choose, not the number of panes. Laminated glass in particular has been shown to be one of the most effective ways to limit noise.
The additional pane of glass in triple pane windows and the more robust framing does make it significantly heavier when compared to double pane windows. But this should not sway your decision on which windows to choose. The counterbalance mechanism that supports triple pane windows carries most of the weight, and if properly installed, the additional weight of a triple pane window should be almost imperceptible to its double pane counterpart. When it comes to functionality, a heavier triple pane window will operate much the same as a double pane window.
This is where the differences between double pane and triple pane windows are truly stark. Triple pane windows offer superior performance in thermal resistance. The additional pane offers an extra space that is filled with a special gas that reduces heat and cold transfer. Depending on the size of the window and its location, triple pane windows can be 55% more energy efficient than double pane. This can have a significant long term impact on the heating and cooling costs of your home.
Companies will vary on cost and it is important to shop around. At Windows on Washington, labor and install costs are fixed for both double and triple pane windows, meaning we only charge for the additional materials in a triple pane windows.
Triple pane units are significantly heavier than double pane - and may require small changes in installation application. Make sure your chosen installer/contractor is familiar with triple pane and has a lot of experience installing them. You don't want to spend top dollar on a best-in-class product and then have a substandard install ruin the project. Remember that the most energy efficient window on the planet - if installed poorly - will not perform as intended.
The National Federation Rating Council (NRFC) is an independent organization that tests windows and provides a standardized rating for each brand/model to that consumers can compare and contrast performance data.
The Department of Energy also provides useful information about replacement windows and how to select the right option for your home.
