Windows on Washington knows that homeowners do their research and are very budget minded consumers. To help, we wanted to present 3 of the most common myths and truths about saving money on replacement window projects so that you can make an informed decision.
1. Myth: I should buy the least expensive windows available because I plan to move in a few years and I will not realize the savings associated with the better products in such a short time.
Truth: Homeowners are often fearful of overspending on a window replacement project if they intend to sell their home within the next few years. The rationalization of this thought process is that they will not recoup the added expense of the more efficient and higher quality product (in energy savings) over such a short time. While the additional Return on Investment (ROI) may not be realized solely in additional energy savings, that is not the only factor that comes into play. There is a quality of materials aspect of this decision that must be considered. Potential homebuyers recognize and appreciate quality materials as evidenced by studies demonstrating that a high quality window replacement has a very strong ROI at resale.
Homeowners that “go cheap” may lose out on the resale improvement impact of a higher quality product. In addition, many contractors that sell the “cheapest” windows also use the “cheapest” installation methods and “cheapest” labor. Always choose a contractor that uses best practice installation techniques and qualified installers to ensure proper unit performance. Remember, going cheap on the product and/or installation can cost you a bundle on lost ROI, repairs, and leaks down the road. In this case, the old saying of "going cheap can cost you more in the long run" certainly holds true!
2. Myth: I should hire a laborer or handyman to install windows instead of paying for professional installation?
Truth: A window’s performance is in direct correlation with the quality of the installation itself. If the most energy efficient window in the world is installed improperly, the result will be air leakage, water infiltration and future headaches. Follow the universal truth in all things construction - if the labor price sounds too good to be true, it’s because it’s too good to be true. You’ll be stuck with low quality materials (cracked caulking and faded trim) and lackluster technique. Choose a contractor that is licensed, bonded, insured, and has positive online reviews or personal referrals. You will be rewarded with a professional installation and a trustworthy company to fall back on should you have future warranty claims.
3. Myth: What a great deal - I’m eligible for the contractor’s “free” financing!
Truth: How does that old saying go - "nothing in this life is free"? Interest rates may be low, but money isn’t free. The contractor must absorb the expense for the administration fees and lending costs charged by the bank. Most “same as cash” financing options in the 6 month range are affordable to the contractor (comparable % to a credit card processing fee) and can be presented without padding the contract price. Once you look at longer term financing programs, the cost is considerably higher...and we mean considerably. Rest assured, you are paying for that “free” financing one way or another. Material prices and install costs can have hidden padding to absorb this cost, so you don’t feel the pinch because you’re focused on the great financing terms.
