After a cold season that seemed like it would never end, spring is finally here and we could not be more excited for the longer days and warmer weather that is on its way. However, spring does come with some downsides. Remember that cracked siding, the leaf-filled gutters and damaged windows you pushed to the back of your mind as you hibernated during winter? Well, spring is here to shine a literal light on all those home improvement projects you told yourself you would eventually get to but never did. The good news? Spring has only just arrived, which means you still have plenty of time to get your house back in tip-top shape. Here are 7 home improvement ideas for spring that will leave your house looking and feeling as good as new in no time.
While you were spending the cooler days rugged up and warm inside your home, the outside of your house was enduring winter’s harsh temperatures and extreme weather conditions. If your siding is old or has not been replaced in a while, it is possible that winter’s intense weather could have caused your siding to crack, warp or peel. It is a good idea to inspect your siding as spring rolls around, or better yet, get a professional home improvement contractor to do it for you.
Winter can wreak havoc on your roof, and depending on where you live, your home’s roof may have been damaged by moisture or water seeping in between the crack and creases. If you notice any curling, peeling or disintegration of your roof’s shingles, it is time to call in a professional roofer to repair or even replace your roof. After all, it is an incredibly important foundation of your home and you want to ensure it is working as it is meant to.
Did your home feel a little cooler than normal this winter? If your home was not as warm as you may have liked it to be these past few months, it might be time to increase the insulation in your attic. By adding an extra layer of insulation on the floor in your attic, you can help maintain the heated air in your living areas where they are supposed to be. Extra attic insulation also does the same thing in summer, helping keep the cool air where it belongs.
While you are already up in the attic adding extra insulation, you may as well search for signs of life, such as any insects or bugs that may have made a home in your attic during winter. You should also be on the lookout for any signs of mold, which usually appear as gray or black blotches. Proper insulation and ventilation helps deter mold growth in your attic, so spring is a good time to get this sorted to prevent problems from developing further in the coming warmer months.
Spring is a great time to check your home for any leaky faucets, clogged drains or sweaty pipes. Some places you should be sure to check include under the kitchen and bathroom sinks to make sure all your hoses and pipes are connected, secure and sealed properly. It is also a good idea to check for water stains around your dishwasher, and check your washing machines hoses for any cracks, bulges or dampness.
Washing the outside of your windows is a perfect spring home improvement idea. The best part is it takes very little time and effort (not to mention how rewarding it is to see your windows sparkle again). While you are at it, it is a good idea to replace any broken or cracked window panes, which may have been caused by strong winds from winter storms and the freezing temperatures. As you check your window panes, make sure to also check your window frames, as they may have warped or deteriorated during winter. If your home is feeling extra drafty as of late, this may be sign that your windows need to be replaced.
