If you’re looking for ways to reduce your energy bill while also doing your part for the planet, you may be considering harnessing the power of solar energy. Did you know solar energy is actually the fastest-growing and most affordable source of new electricity in the United States? While solar energy systems used to come with quite a high price tag, this is no longer the case, allowing more Americans to take advantage of clean energy. So, I thought I’d put together a handy FAQ sheet to help answer some of the most common questions we get asked at Windows on Washington when it comes to installing solar panels. Let’s dive right in!
The good news is no matter what type of roof you have, you can install solar panels, whether you have clay tile to metal standing seam, asphalt, EPDM rubber, TPO or PVC roofing. With that being said, wood shake and slate tile roofs can be challenging to install solar panels on, so it’s best you consult with a professional solar installer to determine the right approach for your roof.
Actually the opposite! When properly installed, solar panels can help protect and extend the life of your roof. This is because solar panels act like a shield on your roof, providing extra layers of protection against the sun’s rays, hail, and other environmental factors. However, it’s essential you have your solar panels installed by a professional to ensure the integrity of your roof – this is definitely not a DIY job.
If your roof needs to be replaced or repaired, your solar panels will need to be temporarily removed (unless they are damaged, in which case they'd need to be replaced). You’ll need to call a professional installer to come and disconnect and remove the panels so you can have your roof replaced or fixed. Once your repairs are finished, the solar panels can be reinstalled.
If you’re worried about the integrity of your roof when installing solar panels – don’t be! Solar panels actually enhance the integrity of your roof by distributing weight evenly across your roof surface, and helping protect it from weather damage. Once again, it’s vital you hire a reputable solar panel installer to connect your panels to avoid any damage to your roofing system.
Solar panels typically add an additional weight of around 2.5 to 4.5 pounds per square foot to your roof. Most roofs are designed to handle this extra weight, but you should always get an expert opinion from a professional roofing contractor who can assess your roof's structural capacity before installing your solar panels.
In most cases, you don’t need to make any major structural modifications to your roof when installing solar panels. However, you should most definitely be asking a professional roofing installer to assess your roof's condition and make any minor modifications, such as strengthening roof attachments or addressing any underlying issues, to make sure the panels are properly secured.
Solar panels shouldn’t affect the insulation or ventilation of your roof if properly installed. This is because solar panels create a layer of air space between the panels and the roof surface, which can actually provide a cooling effect and potentially improve the insulation of your roof. Just like how solar panels protect your roof from overheating in the summer, panels also help your roof stay warmer in the winter because solar panels reduce the rate at which your roof temperature lowers by retaining heat. A qualified solar panel installer will be able to design a system unique to your roof to maintain proper airflow and minimize any impact on insulation and ventilation.
Yes, solar panels can be installed on flat roofs. In fact, flat roofs are often the easiest to install solar panel systems on (and easiest to maintain). But keep in mind they should still be installed at an angle using mounts. Your installer should use special mounting systems, such as ballasted racking or tilted racks, to angle the panels to receive optimal sunlight exposure.
If you’re concerned about the appearance of solar panels, you might be wondering if there are different designs available. Well, the good news is there are various designs of solar panels available, with the most common type being the traditional, framed, crystalline silicon solar panel. However, there are also thin-film solar panels, building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), and even solar tiles or shingles that seamlessly integrate with the roof's appearance. The right solar panels for you will depend on your budget, your roofing system, and energy production efficiency.
Just like any roof, roofs with solar panels also need to be maintained regularly to keep them working at their best. This involves inspecting the panels for dirt, debris, or shading, and cleaning them when needed. While you’re up there, you should also check that no parts have deteriorated or corroded, the vents are free of debris, the switches do not have any defects and the wiring has not been damaged. It’s a good idea to hire a professional solar panel maintenance service if you really want to ensure the longevity of your solar panels (and the integrity of your roof!)
